Since the release in July 2020, this game has quickly risen to be one of the most popular games on the Oculus platform. An advanced first-person shooter game where you experience real-life combat tactics in a fast-paced war zone. But is the quality of the game as good as it can get? Coatsink, the game developer, has done a great job in making an exciting war ground, but graphics and blackness do lack some depth to feel fully immersed with the game.
Onward Game Play
The movement and feel of control when you aim and shoot in this game are almost second to none. Probably one of the best first-person shooter games for VR to date. In this epic wargame, you have a wide range of weapons to choose between as you advance, sp you will never get bored with the arsenal available to you.
one of the biggest issues with playing on an Oculus headset like the Quest is that movement can either feel too quick or too slow depending on the game. But Coatsink has perfectly finetuned movement in this game that feels incredibly realistic compared to similar games.
In the game, you have nothing else to guide you other than your teammates. No maps with lines will guide you to your targets. So this is a team effort that needs to be finetuned in order to succeed in this game.
Compatible devices for Onward
Onward runs pretty smoothly on Quest and most reasonably priced gaming setups. We would not recommend this game on Oculus as, the backlighting in night mode is not clear enough, and the game crashes quite often.
Our recommendation is on a computer with:
This should be enough to keep your system from crashing mid-game. You will also get a much better experience with an HTC Vive when it comes to viewing angle and PPI.
Final thoughts on Onward
There are plenty of similar VR games out there but, what Onward is better for is the element of surprise lurking behind every corner. You don't have any maps laying out where your enemy is at all times, which gives an extra thrill in the game. The huge variety of weapons is a plus but there should also be more options to upgrade certain weapons. The player base on this game can be a bit toxic, so we would not recommend this game for younger players. This is an 18+ game for a reason and it's full-on war. So expect to get your fair share of insults if you screw up for the team. So if you are an experienced trooper in other similar games, this is the got o game if you want a new challenge.
